My mother who was born in used this term just as someone might use conniption fit. When I asked her where the word dido came from she said that her grandmother used it. I can't find anything that puts these two words together. This answer is mostly a follow-up to issues that StoneyB raised justly, in my opinion in his answer regarding the claimed connection between the term dido and Dido of the Aeneid.
